Valves must be standard road specification valves of the sizes specified above. The head must not be ported or polished, ie no modifications are allowed to be made from the manifold face through to the valve seat. The valve seat itself can be recut to any angle but modifications must not extend into the port, 3 angle valve seats are permitted.

It also states that no machining or fettling past the valve seat, so by default this allows modifications up to, but not beyond the valve seat, ie to the chambers.

So the benefits of the current ruling are that as valve seats get worn or recut on several occasions causing the valve heads to recess into the chamber face, this can be corrected by removing metal to bring the chamber back in line with the valve head when in its closed position. It also allows the valves to be unshrouded when fitting the larger valves into the small valve head castings. Both of these points prolong the usable life of the head and mean that head selection is less important as heads can be almost standardised regardless of original specification.

As such the above ruling in its current state allows the modification of the chambers to for valve changing, it is not deemed within the spirit of the rule to carryout excessive fettling to gain performance increases.
